What is wireless charging, and why do I want it?
19/09/2019

Wireless charging seems to be all the rage these days, and it’s one of those buzzwords that’s guaranteed to get people talking at any press event. And yet despite this, the technology is relatively new and so not everyone is familiar with it or knows why it’s seen as such an advantage.

You could argue that wireless charging got big with the iPhone 8 and the iPhone X, both of which came with wireless charging functionality. The idea behind it is to remove the need to plug a charging cable into a device, allowing you instead to simply place the phone on a mat to start charging the battery.

More and more manufacturers are starting to build wireless charging into their devices by default, and it’s easy to see why. After all, even when the phone itself doesn’t support wireless charging, there are plenty of cases out there which use wireless charging to make smartphones compatible. As for the chargers, they can be picked up pretty cheaply, which means there’s no real issue if you need one for at home and one for at work.

Wireless charging is typically slower than wired charging, but it’s not so much slower than it counteracts the convenience. It works by using electromagnetic induction to transfer energy from the charger to the mobile device, and it’s perfectly safe and practical for most environments.

The only time that wireless charging isn’t feasible is when the phone is made out of metal or if it’s in a particularly thick case. Other than that, the technology is relatively simple and getting more powerful and more compatible every day. Even if it doesn’t seem like a big deal at the moment, it’s technology that we’ll all be using one day whether we like it or not.

Wireless charging is the future, and there’s a simple reason for that. Anything that makes our lives easier and more convenient will catch on eventually and inevitably. At the same time, the technology is getting better and better and it’s usually backwards compatible, which means that you can often use the same charger with different devices.

So don’t be surprised if next time you buy a new phone, it comes with wireless charging capability. And don’t be surprised if you get used to using it immediately and can’t imagine a time when you didn’t have one.
